Biden Calls for National Paid Family and Medical Leave Program in American Families Plan

This evening, President Biden will give a joint address to Congress that will focus, in part, on his American Families Plan proposal. This proposal would expand access to services like child care, pre-kindergarten, and community college. Of particular interest to SWACCA, the American Families Plan also calls on Congress to create a national paid family and medical leave program. According to Biden’s plan, the paid leave program would guarantee twelve weeks of paid parental, family, and personal illness leave by year 10 of the program and will also ensure workers get three days of bereavement leave per year starting in year one.

The program would provide workers up to $4,000 per month, with a minimum of two-thirds of average weekly wages replaced. The Biden administration estimates that the program will cost $225 billion over a decade.
