OSHA Indicates Heat Injury and Illness Proposed Rule Will Not Be Released Until January 2024
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) held a meeting of its National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (NACOSH) on January 10, 2023, to hear updates from Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Jim Frederick and a report from NACOSH’s Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Work Group (Work Group).
Of note, during the Work Group’s report, OSHA’s Director Standards, Andy Levinson, announced that the proposed heat injury and illness standard on which SWACCA submitted comments with the Association of Wall and Ceiling Industry (AWCI) back in January 2022 is in progress, but will likely not be ready for publication until January 2024. Levinson said that OSHA has been going through public comments from the heat injury and illness advanced notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM), and its next steps will be to hear recommendations from NACOSH’s Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Work Group Two charged with providing ideas for a heat injury and illness rulemaking. This Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Work Group’s recommendations to OSHA on the substance of a standard are expected to be ready for submission within three months.
