NBER Publishes New Study Estimating the Number of Independent Contractors in the U.S. is Double the Estimate Provided by BLS

The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) released a new study finding that roughly one in ten workers who initially reports working for an employer on one or more jobs (and thus is coded as an employee) is in fact an independent contractor on at least one of those jobs.

After incorporating those misclassified workers, the study found that the number of independent contractors rises to 15%--nearly double the estimate provided by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The full study is available here.
