Lawmakers Say that Labor Nominee Julie Su Directed California Officials to Turn Away Immigration Agents

As Senate Democrats attempt to push forward with Julie Su’s nomination to lead the U.S. Department of Labor, Republican lawmakers are raising new concerns about Su’s nomination. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee Ranking Member Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Committee member Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) said that they have obtained a memorandum Su issued while she was the head of California’s Labor Department that directed employees not to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Su’s directive also told employees to make ICE agents leave if they entered offices or facilities controlled by the California Labor Department. During her confirmation hearing last month, Su said that she did not have access to the memo and did "not recall its precise contents."

The discovery of the directive comes as several moderate Senators, including Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Jon Tester (D-MT), Angus King (I-ME), and Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) remain undecided on Su’s nomination to lead the Labor Department.
