Speaker Johnson Says Senate Immigration/Border Security Deal “Dead on Arrival” in House

In a new “Dear Colleague” letter to House Republicans, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told his colleagues that the “Senate appears to be unable to reach any agreement” on a package that links immigration/border security to aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, adding that “if rumors about the content of the draft proposal are true, it would have been dead on arrival in the House anyway.” Johnson also reiterated his call for the Senate to take up and pass the Secure the Border Act (H.R. 2), which passed the House last Congress and said that House Republicans intend to move forward with impeaching Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Speaker Johnson’s letter comes as former President Donald Trump continues to openly bash the emerging immigration/border security deal and urge Republicans to reject a deal “unless we get everything needed to shut down the invasion of millions & millions of people into our…country.”
