New Study Finds Projects That Use Union Labor Have Better Outcomes Than Those That Use Non-Union Labor

Independent Project Analysis, Inc. released a detailed study confirming that construction projects that use union labor have better outcomes than those that use non-union or open shop labor, despite union projects having higher hourly labor rates. In particular, the study found that union labor delivers lower and more predictable project costs, with costs for projects using union labor coming in 4% below those using non-union labor. The study finds that a key difference between union and non-union labor comes down to the 14% higher productivity of union labor. The study analyzed 1,550 projects, including a good number of conventional building projects, such as offices, labs, and warehouses ranging in size from $200,000 to more than $6 billion.
