Senate Clears First Procedural Hurdle to Avoid Partial Government Shutdown Friday, But the Outcome Remains Far From Certain

Late last night, the U.S. Senate cleared the first procedural hurdle in the process of passing another stopgap funding bill to avoid a partial government shutdown this Friday. The Senate voted 68-13 to invoke cloture on a vehicle to extend current government funding deadline through March 1 and March 8 ahead of a Friday deadline to provide additional funding to the departments of Agriculture, Transportation, Veterans Affairs, Energy. To beat this Friday deadline, the Senate now needs to reach a time agreement to quickly pass the stopgap, which requires consent from all 100 senators.
