McConnell Floats Splitting Ukraine Funding and Border Security/Immigration Provisions

During a GOP Senate Caucus meeting, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) floated the possibility to Senate Republicans of splitting Ukraine funding from border security/immigration reforms. McConnell reportedly acknowledged that the politics of immigration/border security have turned out to be more complicated than he and other Senate Republicans anticipated when they insisted months ago on linking Ukraine funding to immigration/border security. In particular, McConnell said that while he and other Senate Republicans believe the concessions extracted from Democrats on immigration would be “huge wins,” it appears that former President Donald Trump will oppose the package, which could lead to several Republicans also coming out in opposition.
