Rep. George Santos (R-NY) Expelled from U.S. House Triggering Special Election in New York’s Third Congressional District

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 311-114 to expel Rep. George Santos (R-NY) from Congress following a scathing House Ethics Committee report and a 23-count federal indictment charging him with wire fraud and money laundering. NY Governor Kathy Hochul (D-NY) has 10 days to schedule a special election, which must then be held 70 to 80 days after her announcement. There will be no primary for the seat as state Democratic and Republican party leaders will choose the candidates that will run in the special election.

Multiple candidates are vying for the seat, including: (1) former Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY); (2) former NY State Sen. Anne Kaplan (D); (3) NY State Sen. Jack Martins (R); (4) Nassau County, NY Legislator Mazi Melesa Pilip (R); (5) U.S. Army veteran Austin Cheng (D); (6) former JPMorgan VP Kellen Curry (R); (7) Security Traders CEO Jim Toes (R); (8) retired NYPD detective Mike Sapraicone (R); (9) small business owner Greg Hach (R); and (10) small business owner Steve Behar (D).
