Biden Administration Releases Skinny Budget, Calls for Billions to Root Out Worker Misclassification

The Biden Administration released its fiscal year (FY) 2022 discretionary spending request, as the Administration continues work on President Biden’s full budget for FY2022. The discretionary spending request calls for a total of $14.2 billion in funding for the Department of Labor (DOL), which represents an increase of $1.7 billion over last year’s enacted level. Of that $14.2 billion, the Biden Administration is requesting $2.1 billion to invest in DOL’s worker protection agencies. According to the request, the proposed funds will be used to enable DOL to address the misclassification of workers as independent contractors, ensure workers’ wages, benefits, and rights are protected, and improve workplace health and safety.
